Founded by an Award-Winning Continuing Education Creator
Bilingual Speech Resources was founded by Nia Thomas, an accomplished speech-language pathologist with a decade of experience in education and a passion for equity in multilingual settings. Nia earned her undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders and Black Studies with a minor in Linguistics from the State University of New York at New Paltz, graduating magna cum laude and receiving the distinguished Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. She continued her education at Teachers College, Columbia University, earning a Master’s in Biobehavioral Sciences and completing an international externship with deaf students in La Paz, Bolivia.
Over her career, Nia has been at the forefront of addressing systemic inequities, including the over-referral of African American and Latinx students to special education programs. She has led research initiatives and implemented best practices to differentiate language differences from language disorders, facilitated response-to-intervention reading programs for English Language Learners, and designed professional development workshops to educate educators and parents on current research.
From presenting at conferences and conventions to earning accolades such as the ASHA Award for Continuing Education (ACE) and the New Paltz Alumni Distinguished Service Award, Nia’s work has been recognized as a model of excellence. Through BSR, she continues to expand access to culturally responsive speech therapy practices, making the research and best practices in this field more accessible to both practitioners and families.
